Azhar Ali has been named as captain of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars.

Pakistan’s One-Day International (ODI) skipper will lead his franchise in the UAE, it was announced during the Qalandars’ launch party.
It had been suggested that Lahore’s marquee player, Chris Gayle, would be named captain, but as it is uncertain whether the West Indian will play every game because of a back problem, Ali has been given the nod.
Gayle has been struggling with a back injury for some time and has suggested he may require surgery. The timing of any operation has to be juggled between his commitments to the PSL, the World Twenty20 and the Indian Premier League (IPL). Gayle’s contract in the Indian league is worth $1.5million.
It also deserves a mention that Gayle is faced with back problem and earlier wanted to undergo surgery before the IPL but it seems he has now changed his mind by deciding against undergoing the surgery before the IPL to take part in the high-profile Indian league.
Ali was a late draft for Lahore, not selected in the Diamond or Gold category, but left until Silver where he was contesting bids alongside lesser known talent. Initially not selected as a key member of the squad it will be a surprise to many that he has been given the leadership and will therefore feature in every match for the Qalandars.
