Taher Shah, who seems to have descended straight down from the heavens above with his new video ‘Angel’, elicits several perspectives. Some call him brave and courageous for going all out for his ridiculous creations, others believe he has transcended the ‘Internet star’ bracket and has entered mainstream consciousness. Whether you like it or not, it all falls under culture. Another belief, and not entirely unfounded, is that there are artists who produce quality work and deserve that space and coverage a lot more. In the end, it’s a matter of perspective.
And so, while we debate the numbers Shah has generated on social media, one mainstream star has stepped it up a notch and re-created his own version of ‘Angel’. Head to Ali Zafar’s Facebook page and you will find a video of about 1 minutes and 30 seconds in which Shah’s Angel is read as a monologue by Ali Zafar. Make no mistake; this is not a random dubsmash video. It’s a production. Zafar enters a room and sits before a mic, and with minimal, mournful music running in the background, Zafar reads out the lyrics of the song while emoting to the words with a dramatic flair.
Not everyone is amused by Ali’s alternate take though. Some think he’s trying very hard to ride on the coattails of one Taher Shah whose song has gone viral in a way no Zafar song has. Others believe this rendition is less of a tribute and more of a mockery. Watch and decide for yourself.
