RAWALPINDI: Divisional administration on Monday gave a seven-day deadline to the Chinese firm working on Karot Hydropower Project to adopt security measures as advised by the security advisory committee otherwise they would be stopped from undertaking the project worth $1.4 billion.
District Coordination Officer (DCO) Sajid Zafar Dall confirmed to Dawn that the Rawalpindi division commissioner had issued the warning to Chinese experts. The hydropower project on River Jhelum, upstream of Mangla Dam near village Karot at Kahuta Tehsil in Rawalpindi District began some two months ago.
It will be constructed by the Chinese company on build, operate and transfer basis under the Power Generation Policy 2002. The project will be connected to National Grid in 2020.
Mr. Dall said the security advisory committees of the district also pointed out 6082 vulnerable sites in the district including schools, colleges, mosques, Imambargahs, shopping malls and the parks both in public and private sector. “The government has notified these vulnerable places as soft target of the terrorists and directed its administration to adopt the security measures within 10 days otherwise, all of them will be sealed,” he said.
He said that the security advisory committees had been established in 11 circles of the district. They consist of the representatives from district administration, counterterrorism department, special branch of police and local police as well as public representatives.
