KARACHI:  Zubair alias Charya, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) who was arrested during a raid on Friday has admitted to setting Baldia Twon factory on fire, sources said.
He told the investigators that the factory was set on fire at the behest of MQM’s then in-charge of Tanzeemi Committee Hammad Siddiqui after owner of the Ali Enterprises refused to give Rs10 million in extortion.
Charya said he along with Rehman Bhola sprinkled highly inflammable substance around the the building of Ali Enterprises before setting it on fire.
The sources further said that the suspect has been remanded in 90-day physical remand.
The fire at Ali Enterprises killed over 250 people in 2012.
Another suspect taken into custody in a raid within the remits of Sachal Police Station confessed to killing seven people including a nephew of Amir Khan, a central leader of the MQM.
Abbas Ali, whose political affiliation has not been disclosed, said he along with Abid Mota murdered Khan's nephew besides committing acts of targeted killing in 2012 and 2013.
Abbas told investigators that he had close ties with SHO of Mubina Town police station and indulged in criminal acts on the orders of MQM leader Hammad Siddiqui.
