KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has ordered the formation of a dedicated security force of K-IV project, so that it could be completed within two years.
"This is most important project and any delay or snags in its way would not be tolerated," Shah said while presiding over a meeting of K-IV at the chief minister house on Saturday.
The meeting was attended by Provincial Ministers Syed Murad Ali Shah and Jam Khan Shoro, Chief Secretary Siddique Memon, Additional Chief Secretary Aijaz Ali Khan, Principal Secretary to CM Alamuddin Bullo, Finance Secretary Sohail Rajput, Local Government Secretary Noor Mohammad Leghari, Karachi Commissioner Asif Haider Shah, Water Board Managing Director Misbah and other concerned officers.
The chief minister was told that some people were creating problems in the construction work of the project causing unnecessary delays and harassment of the workers. On this the chief minister directed the chief secretary to personally coordinate with the Water Board and get them the required security force.
"I would dedicate a special force for the project under a DSP," Shah said and also directed the Karachi commissioner to coordinate with SSP Malir and Thatta for the security of the project.
It was pointed out that 5,117 acre government land was required in Thatta for K-IV for which the Karachi commissioner said that with the approval of the chief minister he had provided the required land for the project. In Karachi 8,225 acre land was required to lay down lines and other necessary constructions.
Commissioner Asif Haider Shah said that out of the 8,255 acre required land, only 6,218 acre land was available in the alignment of the project, while the remaining land belonged to private owners and on this the chief minister again directed the chief secretary to personally look after the acquisition of the private land.
It may be noted that that total cost of the K-IV project is Rs 25.5 billion and is being launched to provide 650 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to Karachi in three phases. In the first phase 260 MGD water to be provided from Kinjhar to Karachi and in the second phase another 260 MGD and in third and final phase, 130 MGD water scheme would be launched in 2020.
The meeting was told that soil testing and Environmental Impact Assessment studies have been completed. The water board has already completed one of its assignments and was going for inviting national and international tenders for the remaining assignments within the next 2 months.
Syed Qaim Ali Shah directed the Water Board Managing Director Misbah to complete the first phase of the project within 27 months, and concluded by saying, "I would not tolerate delays any more. Whatever the problem is, the process has to be completed within three months and I would personally visit the ground."
