KARACHI: Police are facing political pressure in investigation of a case involving death of a student who allegedly committed self-immolation after he was denied entry into examination hall at a private university, sources told Geo News on Thursday.
Abdul Basit succumbed to his burn injuries at a hospital and his family refused to accept the death as an act of suicide, claiming that the student was murdered.
A brother of the deceased has filed an application seeking to register a murder case.
However, a police official told Geo News on condition of anonymity that inquiry report confirms Abdul Basit committed suicide by self-immolation. He said since suicide is a criminal offense, the case could only be registered against the deceased.
"The case would be disposed of the moment it is registered," the official said.
Geo News has also received footage of the incident, in which Basit could be seen lying on the floor and exchanging words with students gathered around him.
The students of the university are seen trying to put out the fire with their gowns.
